Crean to push ahead with BER spending. Tell Comeon what you think.

Despite the horrendous waste, libraries with no books and halls many schools didn't want, the Government is determined to press ahead with the BER spendathon according to The Australian.  Is spending at any cost justifiable? Do you think this BER will result in improvements in the 3 R's? Tell us what you think.

Firstly, I don't believe something on the basis of its being printed in the Australian. GetUp has a credible independent voice and this org doesn't, and won't if it just recycles the content and outlook of the Murdoch press. Secondly, the question involves a false dichotomy. BER doesn't result in "improvements in the 3 R's" because (a) they aren't the point of education and (b) the program is opposed by people who think all federal government investment in school infrastructure is essentially wasteful. They wouldn't be happy no matter how many libraries or halls were successfully built (thousands across the country), since their ideological blinkers prevent them from seeing it as anything other than an inherent failure.

Thanks for your view GB. ComeOn uses a range of sources. Many proved to be right on the mining tax issue for example.

Not sure the point about GetUp is relevant at all. It takes a left wing view and had prominent pollies on its board, so the issue of independence and credibility will vary depending on perspective. GetUp raised funds to support the super tax that not even the Government now supports in its original form.

On the point of the blog post, many people do think reading, writing and arithmetic are pretty important educational outcomes. Just as many think taxpayer funds should be managed more carefully. Isn't the question whether these or better outcomes could have been achieved better at a much lower cost?
