First focus groups in? Things have changed since carbon tax promise, says Julia Gillard
Within days of denying she'd broken a promise (incredibly) and that suggestions to the contrary were "semantics", AAP reports JULIA Gillard has now admitted she promised there would be no carbon tax during the last election but said circumstances had changed. The scramble to shift the language on an almost daily basis raises one of two or both questions...
are we seeing the minute to minute political responses to focus groups or simply the tussle between old Julia and new Julia?
Three things remain clear - it is a broken promise and it is a tax and not even Greg Combet today was defending the proposition that a Carbon Tax won't work. Let's be clear he said on the Insiders today- "we're implementing an ETS". Even Penny Wong said a Carbon Tax would affect emissions. And today the equally extraordinary 'leak' to the media that the Government will ensure low income earners are not just compensated but "will be better off".
If the aim is to change behaviour - how can you tax people and redistribute it so that people not only don't change behaviour but are financially better off. It defeats the purpose.
Confused? We're not. A Carbon Tax doesn't work - even Penny Wong said so. They promised not to have a Carbon Tax, something Gillard demied but today admits it is nothing more than a tax.
The Government either has to drop it or seek a mandate. Sign the petition and more importantly, tell as many contacts as you can.
What do you think?
